Description
There are 24 champions available in Dungeon Master. You can resurrect or reincarnate up to 4 of them:
Resurrecting a champion keeps all its skills and statistics,
Reincarnating a champion slightly improves statistics and removes all skill levels.
Reincarnation is better than resurrection in the long term, because champions will progress quickly and gain more points in statistics.

Origins of the champions names
Most of the information below was given by Andy Jaros, one of the creators of the game:
- 1. Iaido Ruyito Chiburi (Male): Iaido is the Japanese way of the sword, having katas similar to Tai Chi. Ryuto is the sixth form of Iaido. Chiburi is the shaking of blood from the sword.
- 2. Zed Duke Of Banville (Male): Zed is the name of the hero in SunDog, a previous game from FTL. Banville is a colony he has to find.
- 3. Chani Sayyadina Sihaya (Female): Chani is a fremen heroine in Frank Herbert’s Dune book. Her portrait shows the characteristic blue eyes of the fremen.
- 4. Hawk The Fearless (Male): According to Andy Jaros: "I don’t remember, I think we all kind of named him". However, it is probably a reference to Black Hawk, the famous indian war chief of the Sauk tribe born in 1767. During his lifetime, he earned a reputation as a daring warrior.
- 5. Boris Wizard Of Baldor (Male): According to Andy Jaros: "Mike Newton’s character. I do not remember the origin.". In J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, Baldor was the heir of Brego, second king of Rohan. At the feast to celebrate the construction of Meduseld he made an oath to enter the Paths of the Dead and was never seen again. His remains were discovered by Aragorn during the War of the Ring.
- 6. Alex Ander (Male): Andy Jaros' gaming name, Alexander.
- 7. Nabi The Prophet (Male): Nabi is the Arabic and Hebrew word for Prophet. According to Andy Jaros: "Dennis Walker’s rastaman."
- 8. Hissssa Lizar Of Makan (Male): Just a lizardman, coincidentally the sound he makes when he speaks. Makan means "to eat" in Malay.
- 9. Gothmog (Male): Gothmog is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth fictional universe. He was the lieutenant of Minas Morgul, second-in-command to the Witch-king of Angmar, lord of the Nazgûl. Gothmog shares his name with a much earlier character, Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. Gothmog was also the name chosen by Andy Jaros for his college Game Master’s character for Dungeons & Dragons.
- 10. Sonja She Devil (Female): Inspired by the movie 'Red Sonja' (1985). The Red Sonja character was a spinoff of the original Conan novels.
- 11. Leyla Shadowseek (Female): Nothing in particular.
- 12. Mophus The Healer (Male): Derived from morphine, evocative of sleep and pain relief.
- 13. Wuuf The Bika (Female): Coincidentally the sound she makes when she speaks.
- 14. Stamm Bladecaster (Male): A Dwarvish name.
- 15. Azizi Johari (Female): Azizi Johari was the Playboy playmate of the month June 1975. She was the fourth African-American woman to become a Playboy 'Playmate of the Month'.
- 16. Leif The Valiant (Male): Named after the celebrated viking Leif Ericson.
- 17. Tiggy Tamal (Female): I think Nancy Holder came up with this one, I’m not sure.
- 18. Wu Tse Son Of Heaven (Female): The Empress of China from 624 to 705. Referred to as 'Son of Heaven' because women were not officially recognised for the position of emperor at the time.
- 19. Daroou (Male): No information yet.
- 20. Halk The Barbarian (Male): Inspired by the hero of 'Conan the Barbarian' (1982) played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 21. Syra Child Of Nature (Female): Almost the name of girl I had a crush on when I was 19, changed to Seri (her real name) for DM2.
- 22. Gando Thurfoot (Male): Inspired by hobbits characters in the book 'The Lord Of The Rings' by J.R.R. Tolkien.
- 23. Linflas (Male): One of the Elves in the fun board wargame Swords & Sorcery by Simulations Publications Inc.
- 24. Elija Lion Of Yaitopya (Male): Dennis Walker's tribute to Rastafarianism. The Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. Yaitopya is the local name of Ethiopia.
