Music

Macintosh US Dungeon Master II (USA, Macintosh) - MIDI
This archive contains 28 MIDI files extracted from the executable resource fork. A software synthesizer called SoundMusicSys was licensed by FTL and included in the game to play the MIDI files using sound samples also included in the resource fork. You can play these .mid files with any player like Windows Media Player or Winamp, however instruments may sound weird because these files are intended to be played with the software synthesizer supplied with the game. The track numbers are those used internally by the game.
Macintosh US MP3 recordings
The same MIDI music was used for PC and Macintosh US versions but it sounds differently because each version used a different synthesizer. Recordings of both versions are provided here for easy comparison.
The music of the PC version was recorded with DOSbox emulating a Sound Blaster 16 sound card.
The music of the Macintosh US version was recorded with Audacity while the game was running in the minivMac emulator.
The track numbers are those used internally by the game in each version.

Differences between Japanese and US editions

  • Japanese version was released in August 1994 and US version was released in October 1995.
  • The Japanese version uses the old 16 colors graphics while the US version uses the upgraded 256 colors graphics.
  • There is an introduction animation in the Japanese version that is not included in the US version. This animation is also present in the Sega CD / Mega CD versions. The text in the animation is in English language even if the rest of the game is in Japanase. It was probably removed from the US release because it contained some of the old graphics that were upgraded.
  • The Japanese version has only the normal screen layout at 320x200 pixels and an option to display the screen at doubled size (640x400). The US version keeps these options and also adds another alternate layout.
  • The Japanese version contains some audio CD tracks. Instead of audio CD tracks, the US version has MIDI music files embedded in the resource fork of the executable file. FTL licensed a software MIDI player named SoundMusicSys that relied on sound samples. All the sound samples and other associated data are also embedded as resources (with resource types SND, INST, SONG, MIDI).
  • In the Macintosh US version, the menu on top of the screen allows you to start a new game and load a saved game at any time during gameplay.
  • Only the Macintosh US version supports the native Macintosh “balloon help” feature. When enabled in the Macintosh menu on top of the screen, hovering the mouse over any user interface element the game shows a balloon explaining its purpose.
  • Both versions have an additional scrolling credits screen accessible from the ‘Apple’ menu on the top left of the screen. However the text is not the same in the Japanese (left) and US (right, same text for both demo and full game) versions:

Crack

Dungeon Master II (Japan, Macintosh) - Crack
Crack for Dungeon Master II for Macintosh version 1.0 (Japanese)
To apply the crack, just replace the original ‘Skullkeep’ executable file with the one supplied in the archive (make sure to replace the resource fork) or follow these steps:
  1. Open the file in a hexadecimal editor.
  2. Go to offsets 37FC9h and 3809Dh and replace ‘66’ with ‘67’ at both locations (this replaces the asm instruction ‘bne’ with ‘beq’). This will remove the protection check when you start the game.
  3. Go to offset 3653Fh and replace ‘66’ with ‘67’ (this replaces the asm instruction ‘bne’ with ‘beq’). This will remove the protection check when you save the game.
