Ending animation

To watch the ending animation of Dungeon Master for PC, you can replace the FTL logo animation by the ending animation. You do this by renaming the file “SWOOSH” to “SWOOSH.BAK” and the file “END” to “SWOOSH”.

Item cloning

It is possible to exploit a bug to clone items. When you use the Firestaff to cast a Fluxcage, an event is created to later remove it from its square. If the Fluxcage is moved to another square before it expires then the Fluxcage is never removed: because of a bug, the game tries to remove it from the square it was created on instead of the square it was moved to. However, the Fluxcage data is still marked as unused when it expires. There are two ways to move a Fluxcage before it expires:

  • Enable a teleporter on its square: this works in all versions of the game.
  • Open a pit on its square: this only works in earlier versions of the game (Dungeon Master for Atari ST, Apple IIGS, Amiga 2.x and FM-Towns) because of another bug where explosions (including Fluxcage) do not levitate. This bug was fixed in all later versions of the game.

Once you have assembled the Firestaff and the Power Gem at (13,49,36), turn back and throw the Firestaff through the door. Cross the door and grab the Firestaff. If you cross the door while holding the Firestaff then two walls are closed off in the level above to block access to the upper levels. Here are two sample locations where you can exploit the bug using the completed Firestaff:

  • Cast a Fluxcage in the blinking teleporter at (02,09,38) and it will be teleported nearby to (15,38). Move to this square or the square beside.
  • If you use one of the earlier versions listed above, cast a Fluxcage over one of the pits at (04,20,10) and it will fall through to the level below. Climb Down or jump in the pit and stand in the Fluxcage square or one square beside.

After a while when the event expires, the teleported/fallen Fluxcage will look like there is also something else hanging in the air. Put an item on the floor in the Fluxcage and you can now pick it up multiple times as it also remains on the floor.
Notes:

  • If you pile up several items on the floor, only the top one can be picked up.
  • The game may show graphical glitches, freeze or crash because of cloned items.
  • Do not throw items through the Fluxcage or the game will freeze.

Infinite Health Cheat

With this cheat the health of champions will never decrease.
This cheat was published in British magazine ‘PC Zone’, Issue #11 February 1995, Page 128 and applied only to Dungeon Master for PC version 3.4 Multilanguage.
It requires a change in the file named FIRES so you should make a backup copy of this file before applying the following procedure:

From a DOS command prompt, run the DEBUG.EXE program (supplied with MS-DOS) by typing DEBUG. At the Debug prompt, type the following commands (press enter after each command):

  1. NFIRES
  2. L
  3. E 8900 30 (if you have Dungeon Master for PC version 3.4 English, French, German)
    or
    E 8862 30 (if you have Dungeon Master for PC version 3.4 English)
  4. W
  5. Q

The DEBUG commands replace byte value 34h with value 30h at offset 8800h/8762h in file FIRES (DEBUG.EXE loads the executable at offset 0x0100 hence the 8900/8862 in the command instead of 8800/8762).
This change corresponds to offset 11564h/111E4h after FIRES is decompressed in memory. This change causes the updated health value of a champion after an attack to be written elsewhere in the champion data, at a location defining some attributes. Writing an arbitrary value there may cause the redrawing of some parts of the screen containing champion data (no real consequence) however it may also disable the ability of the champion to perform an action. In that case, you have to wait until the champion takes some other damage that would reenable it (the effect depends on the amount of damage taken).

Hacking skills and statistics

You can exploit a bug in Dungeon Master for PC v3.4 (English) to overwrite some bytes in memory that define a champion’s skills and statistics values:

  1. Resurrect or reincarnate one champion, for example “ZED DUKE OF BANVILLE”.
  2. Open the mirror of another champion and choose Reincarnate.
  3. Type the first name of the first champion in your party (“ZED” in our example) and press enter.
  4. Type at least one character in the title field and click on OK. Nothing seems to happen, as the game prevents you to have two champions with the same name.
  5. Click on BACKSPACE or press the backspace key on your keyboard until you have deleted all characters from the title.
  6. Press again Backspace 268 times. The cursor will appear to the left of the champion name field.
  7. Press the “Z” key 160 times.
  8. Click OK. The champion is now reincarnated. The skills and statistics of the first champion you selected now have been increased.

Note: After the use of this hack, the game becomes very unstable and will probably crash. Some of the issues I have seen include: crash with “System Error 70”, champion portrait corruption, champion inventory corruption, fireball frozen in air.

Free mana (Dungeon Master for PC)

Decompress FIRES.EXE with UNLZEXE.
Open the decompressed file with a hexadecimal editor. Find this byte sequence:
01 02 03 04 05 06 02 03 04 05 06 07 04 05 06 07 07 09 02 02 03 04 06 07
and replace all bytes by 00.
During the game the mana will not decrease when you use the runes.

Champion looting

Choose a champion that has some mana and Wizard ability. Stand in front of another mirror and bump in the wall until the champion only has a few remaining health points. Now cast a Poison Cloud spell and click on the mirror. Do not resurrect or reincarnate the champion in the mirror and wait for the death of your champion because of the poison. This will not end the game as it should. Now exit the mirror and you can wander in the dungeon like a ghost. In some versions of the game like Amiga 3.6, PC 3.4, X68000 and PC-9801, you can even walk through walls, including behind champion portraits where you can loot their possessions. In other versions like Atari ST 1.x, Atari ST 2.x, Amiga 2.x and Apple IIGS 2.x this is not possible.
